15 Surprising Facts About Wooden Warrior's First 15 Years

Fifteen years ago, we took a chance. We tore out a beloved old coaster (RIP Mad Mouse), brought in one of the most respected design firms in the business, and asked them to build something that would change what families expected from a day at Quassy.

It worked out pretty well.

As we celebrate Wooden Warrior's 15th anniversary, and National Roller Coaster Day, here are 15 facts about this ride that even some of our most loyal guests might not know.

1. It opened in April 2011 — and the line hasn't really stopped since. Wooden Warrior welcomed its first riders in the spring of 2011 and became a centerpiece of the park almost immediately. Fifteen seasons later, it still draws a crowd.

2. It replaced our beloved Mad Mouse. Long before Wooden Warrior, Quassy guests knew the Mad Mouse well. Replacing it was a big call. We think it aged pretty gracefully, but it didn’t quite keep up with the times.

3. Yes, it's actually built out of wood. In an era of steel coasters and hybrid designs, Wooden Warrior is the real thing! All the classic creaks, rattles, and sensations that make wooden coasters a completely different experience than anything else.

4. It was designed by The Gravity Group. Not everyone knows this, but The Gravity Group is one of the most respected names in wooden coaster design in the world. Getting them involved was a deliberate choice, and it shows in every foot of track.

5. It made U.S. roller coaster history. Wooden Warrior was the first coaster in the country to operate with Timberliner trains, a purpose-built design that allows wooden coasters to run smoother and more comfortably than traditional trains ever could. That milestone happened right here in Middlebury, Connecticut.

6. Thirty-five feet doesn't sound like much. Riders disagree. At approximately 35 feet tall, Wooden Warrior is modest by coaster standards. But The Gravity Group designed every turn and hill to maximize what the layout could do — and what it does is surprise people, consistently.

7. The airtime catches everyone off guard. First-time riders almost always mention it. The ride's compact layout is packed with genuine moments of weightlessness that nobody quite expects from a family coaster. That's entirely by design.

8. The name came from the community. "Wooden Warrior" wasn't decided in the boardroom. It came from a naming contest involving local students. We love that. It always felt like this coaster belonged to the community, and it started that way from day one.

9. It put Quassy on the national coaster map. Before Wooden Warrior opened, many coaster enthusiasts hadn't made the trip out to Middlebury. After it opened, that changed. We started seeing guests come in from across New England, and well beyond, specifically for this ride.

10. Coaster enthusiasts still make special trips just to ride it. Fifteen years in, Wooden Warrior is still on bucket lists. There's a whole community of riders who track down the best coasters in the world, and ours consistently makes the cut.

11. The lake views are genuinely unmatched. We're a little biased, but we challenge anyone to name a more scenic spot to ride a wooden coaster than the shores of Lake Quassapaug. On a clear day, that view from the top of the lift hill is something.

12. It still earns international recognition. Year after year, Wooden Warrior continues to appear on Golden Ticket Award lists among the world's top family coasters. For a park our size, that never gets old to say.

13. It's been a rite of passage for a generation of riders. For a lot of kids in Connecticut and across New England, Wooden Warrior was their very first wooden coaster. That's a big deal and we don't take it lightly.

14. Those kids are now bringing their own kids. We're starting to see it regularly now. Parents who rode Wooden Warrior as children, walking through our gates with their own families and heading straight for this coaster. That's the kind of legacy that means more than any award.

15. After 15 seasons, it still rides beautifully. Some coasters show their age. Wooden Warrior doesn't. Between the Timberliner trains, the quality of the original build, and the work our team puts in every year, this coaster still delivers exactly what it did on opening day. We're proud of that.

Riding for a Piece of Coaster History

This National Roller Coaster Day, celebrating Wooden Warrior will also help preserve the history of the rides we love. A percentage of sales at Quassy on Sunday, Aug. 16, will be donated to the National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving historic roller coaster vehicles, artifacts and stories.
