The Little Coaster That Could: How Wooden Warrior Became One of the World's Best Family Coasters
June 11, 2026

We'll be honest. When we first opened Wooden Warrior back in 2011, we knew we had something special. What we didn't fully anticipate was just how far that little wooden coaster on the shores of Lake Quassapaug would go.
Fifteen years later, it's one of the most recognized family roller coasters in the world. And we couldn't be prouder.
It Started With a Bet on Ourselves
Replacing our longtime Mad Mouse ride was no small decision. For a family-owned amusement park in Middlebury, Connecticut, investing in a brand-new wooden coaster designed by The Gravity Group, one of the most respected names in coaster design, was a genuine leap of faith.
We wanted to build something that families in Connecticut and across New England hadn't experienced before. A coaster that was thrilling enough for enthusiasts but welcoming enough for a six-year-old riding their very first wooden coaster. That balance is harder to get right than it sounds.
Wooden Warrior got it right.
A First in Roller Coaster History
What made Wooden Warrior stand out from the beginning wasn't just the ride experience. It was the technology behind it.
Wooden Warrior was the first roller coaster in the United States to operate with Timberliner trains, an innovative train design built specifically for wooden coasters. Smoother through the turns, more flexible through the hills, and noticeably more comfortable than traditional wooden coaster trains.
For our guests, that meant a ride that felt both classic and modern at once. For the coaster world, it was a milestone, and it happened right here at Quassy.
Don't Let the Stats Fool You
Thirty-five feet tall. Thirty-five miles per hour. Those numbers don't sound like the makings of a world-class coaster.
But that's exactly what makes Wooden Warrior so fun to watch people experience for the first time. They step off the platform a little skeptical, the train leaves the station, and within seconds they're getting airtime they weren't expecting, snapping through turns that feel just a beat quicker than their brain anticipated. By the time they roll back into the station, the skepticism is gone. They're already asking if they can ride again.
The Gravity Group designed this ride to make every single foot of track count. Fifteen years later, it still does.
Recognition Speaks for Itself
We're not in the business of boasting, but we'd be leaving out an important part of this story if we didn't mention what Wooden Warrior has meant to the broader amusement industry.
Over the years, Wooden Warrior has earned consistent recognition through the prestigious Golden Ticket Awards, ranking among the top family roller coasters in the world. For a park our size, competing alongside attractions from some of the largest theme parks on the planet isn't something we take lightly.
It's a reflection of what our team puts into this place every single season and a reminder that great experiences don't always come from the biggest parks.
What Fifteen Years Really Looks Like
Awards matter. But what moves us most is something you can't put on a plaque.
It's the families who have made Wooden Warrior part of their summer. The parents who rode it in 2011 and are now watching their own kids throw their hands up on the first drop. The moment a child experiences their first wooden coaster, right here at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury, Connecticut, and decides they love roller coasters.
That's what fifteen years of Wooden Warrior really looks like. And that's why we keep showing up to make sure every ride is worth it.
One of Connecticut's Must-Ride Coasters
For visitors searching for the best roller coasters in Connecticut, Wooden Warrior continues to stand apart.
It delivers the classic feel that wooden coaster fans love, while remaining approachable for younger riders and families experiencing their first thrill ride together. It's exciting without being intimidating. Nostalgic without feeling outdated.
Whether you're visiting Quassy for the first time or returning as a longtime season passholder, Wooden Warrior remains one of the park's must-ride attractions and a centerpiece of the Quassy experience.
